Shopify vs. Shopify Plus: When to Upgrade Your Store

Shopify

What Plans Does Shopify Offer?

Shopify has become the de-facto platform for eCommerce in 2023, serving stores and customers from the smallest to industry leaders, and they’ve been responsible to a significant degree for the explosion of the DTC space in recent years.

Whether you’re a one-man shop selling handmade wares out of your home, or a publicly traded company looking for a robust platform to power your online sales, Shopify has a plan for everyone. Between their Lite plan, Shopify plan, and Advanced plan, a significant chunk of Shopify’s users will be covered, but when does it make sense to join the ranks of the 28,000+ stores on Shopify Plus?

Shopify Plus Pricing

No doubt, the price differential between the Advanced Plan and Shopify Plus is stark, with a fixed fee nearly 10x the price. Despite that, we most strongly recommend Shopify Plus for clients because it’s the cheaper option.

How does that work? Despite the high fixed fee, Shopify Plus becomes an excellent value over time as it offers lower fees per transaction. It’s depends a bit on transaction volume, AOV, and other pieces, but if you’re somewhere between $1-$2 million per year in revenue it makes sense to start looking into the breakdown.

Here’s a helpful tool to understand the breakdown of costs and the thresholds where Plus becomes the cheaper option overall.

Shopify Plus Features

Support, Uptime, and Scalability

With the added cost, Shopify Plus offers more guarantees to users, including higher/faster order throughput, dedicated support teams with quick response times, and uptime guarantees, especially helpful during events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Checkout Extensibility

Shopify recently announced Checkout Extensibility as the successor to it’s Plus-enabled checkout customizability features. This is a huge deal that unlocks tons of possibilities – for a good understanding, check out Checkout Blocks, a Shopify App that seemingly tries to cover as many of these possibilities as possible.

Most interestingly, though, and following the previous conversation about cost, Plus allows for checkout upsells, which can even further offset the monthly cost of the Plus subscription by increasing AOV.

B2B and Wholesale

Shopify Plus makes it seamless to provide interfaces for B2B and wholesale customers to order your products, unlocking an extra channel with limited extra lift.

Analytics and Reporting

Plus unlocks Shopify’s analytics for your store, allowing you to learn more about sales, customer behavior, and other key metrics that play a part in understanding and growing your store.

Shopify Plus is a Great Value

Shopify has backed up their promise of building the future of digital commerce, and continues to share the spoils of their continued wins with all merchants on their platform. Shopify Plus provides an incredible amount of value for its customers, and it’s important to understand the inflection points in the life of your business where it makes sense to make the jump.
